Now a blockbuster in making great platformers for Nintendo, Rare's biggest breakthrough was with this game, Donkey Kong Country. In ways, Donkey Kong Country is a lot like Super Mario World. Like Super Mario World, in Donkey Kong Country, the main ways to defeat enemies are by jumping on top of them and throwing things at them. Just like Mario and Luigi love to collect coins, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong love collecting bananas, since they are monkeys.<p>King K. Rool, a huge alligator, has stolen all the bananas from the Kongs' Banana Hoard. So it's up to Donkey Kong and his friend Diddy Kong to try and track down King K. Rool and defeat him in order to get their mounds of bananas back. But it won't be so easy because along the way, there are several dangerous enemies that they'll have to look out for such as Kremlings, vultures, beavers, bees with a mean stinger, octopusses, and tons of others.<p>Fortunately for the Kongs, they do have a few friends on their side. The most famous of them is Cranky Kong, who offers tips, major trash talking, and interesting stories. Cranky Kong is actually the original Donkey Kong who threw barrels at Mario. Funky Kong is a real cool character who offers an easy way to travel between worlds, and Candy Kong is here to save your game. There are also a few animal characters to lend a helping ride such as Rambi the rhinoceros, Winky the frog, Enguarde the swordfish, and others.<p>The terrains in Donkey Kong Country are a wonder to behold. The main reason Donkey Kong Country was such a standout title when it was first released is because of its way above average graphics. Whether it's the characters, the terrains, or the backgrounds, the graphics all have a 3D-ish look to them, and they're almost too good to be included in a 16-bit game.<p>Donkey Kong Country also has great sound effects and music. A lot of the music is real catchy and unforgettable, and the sound effects fit the game to a tee. Everything else about Donkey Kong Country isn't bad either. The control is top-notch, the replay value has no limits, and this is a game that is always fun.<p>The other reason Donkey Kong Country was an instant classic when it was first released is because of its many spectacular environments. There is everything from jungles, underwater environments, polluted areas, tree tops, mine cart rides, and plenty more to be experienced. In each level, all you really have to do is get to the end of them since this is a 2D side scroller, but it's a lot more fun if you try and find as many of the secret areas as you can.<p>Like many of the other great 2D side scrollers such as Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country is overflowing with secret areas. There are places in walls to break a hole in, almost invisible hidden barrels, and several other ways to find a secret. Whenever you save your game, it always tells what percentage (there is a total of 101% in the game) of secrets that you've found. THIS is what keeps the replay value so high, on top of the game being fun enough to go all the way through from start to finish, over and over again.<p>If you ever get tired of playing the game by yourself and want to challenge somebody or play along with them, you'll be glad to hear that Donkey Kong Country is a two player game. In two-player mode, you and a friend can work as a team (one person controls Donkey Kong and the other controls Diddy), or play the adventure game against each other in order to see who can get the farthest while losing the least amount of lives.<p>Donkey Kong Country is one of the best adventure and platforming video games of all time. If you have a Super Nintendo, I 101% recommend getting Donkey Kong Country. It's a classic!

Who would've thought that the Donkey Kong series which started out as an "ape throwing barrels at people" game would turn into a full scale, 5 star, action/adventure extravaganza??? Donkey Country had it all. Flawless, clean and sometimes breath taking graphics and effects to complement the endless arrays of level by level challenge and outstanding game play.<p>The many bonus levels intrigued you and challenged you to be your best. The animal companions gave you an extra incentive to play because the Swordfish, the Rhino and the Frog made it that much better and that much fun. <p>The other thing that really revolutionized action/adventure type games was Donky Kong Country's boards and levels because none were exactly the same. Each board had it's individual quirks and perks and each board gave you that needed challenge that other action/adventure type games lacked at the time.<p>You could not put this game down. Me, personally, after 8 months after this game's release, I was still playing it because it was still that good (that and I was determined to play a perfect game and clear all the boards including the bonus levels).<p>This was the first installment of the newly revived series and it was a MUST NEED and still is. I would definately recommend this series to anyone and for those of us Triple Crowners (own the PS2, X-Box and Gamecube), I would definately stop all of the other games I was doing when the next installment of the Donky Kong series came to the home system. But for now, get this one and play the hell out of it!

I remember in 1994 how incredible I thought this game was graphically. Looking back at it now, in this era of PS2, Xbox, or GC, it still stands up. Why? Not only is it an awesome game, with many different levels, the graphics are still awesome. SNES was one of the best systems that ever came out. This is one reason why. If you're looking for a great game, check this out.

When rumours of new 32-bit consoles were becoming a reality many fans began to forget about the Snes, that was of course until the release of `Donkey Kong Country'. A game so ahead of it's time that at it's first E3 showing many reporters mistook it for a N64 game.<p>With a revolutionary graphics engine and fantastic gameplay to boot, `Dkc' took the gaming world by storm and indeed acted as the final nail in the Megadrives coffin. Also notable is that this was the first `Big hit' from gaming giants Rare who would follow with the classics `Goldeneye' and `Perfect Dark'.<p>Another important point is that this game `is' completely without flaws, the rendering is perfect and the games music is one of the best soundtracks ever recorded. In technical retrospect `Dkc' is a 2d sidescroller with a 3d graphics overhaul, in English any fan of platformers should not be without this inspirational classic.<p>`Donkey Kong Country' was also the largest ever cartridge at the time carrying a massive (at the time) 32mb, and `til this very day the game remains a classic. If you still have a Snes or your a retro gaming fan like myself you should pick this up as soon as possible.

Donkey Kong Country for the Super Nintendo is one of the best console games of all-time. Just like Super Mario World you kill enemies by jumping on top of them. Rool, the biggest, cruelest enemy in this game has stolen all of the bananas form the Kongs' banana hoard and your goal is to defeat him to get all of the bananas back and to beat the game, but first of all you have beat each level and world (just like in Mario games) before you get to King K. Rool.<p>But luckily the Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong have many friends who help them along the way. The smart-mouthed Cranky Kong is always there to provide a few laughs and tell some great stories. Funky Kong will give you a ride in his plane-like barrel that brings you to other worlds and levels that you want to play again or find the bonuses in. And Candy Kong is always there to save your game and blow you a kiss. There are also many animal friends such as Enguarde the swordfish, Rambi the rhino, and Winky the frog who help make the levels easier to beat.<p>Donkey Kong Country became the best selling Super Nintendo game of all time for a good reason. The levels and trying to find all of the bonuses is very fun and challenging. The graphics seem way better than the 16-bit that they actually are. Donkey Kong Country also has great sound effects when you kill an enemy or lose a life and great music during the levels.<p>If you beat the game or just get bored of playing by yourself you can change over to two player mode where you can chose to be a team where one of you controls Donkey Kong and the other Diddy, or play against each other. All 3 modes are very fun and provide several hours of fun.<p>This is one of the best SNES games ever and should be added to your game collection as soon as you can get it. It's one of the best games of all time for a classic system!
