McCain's call to suspend gas taxes

Right thing to do

While it might not effect the rich, think of the middle class and poor families, especially those with children. Many families are calling off their vacations and some are working extra to keep up with the costs. Our society is very dependent on gas and needs to look at building solar powered cars.

Gas prices in the US are still much much lower than they are in, say, Europe. I'd argue they're still too low, as evidenced by the fact that people aren't switching to more efficient cars in droves and aren't altering their driving habits. Given all the negative externalities (environmental, geopolitical, etc), suspending gas taxes is the exact opposite of what needs to be done.

If you don't like high gas prices, try driving less or getting a more efficient car. A gas tax holiday would not provide significant relief to people -- to the extent it had any effect it would incent people to do more of what they should be doing less of (consuming oil).
