It is going to be hard to prevent a civil war, since one is raging already. If we leave now, our presence will be replaced by Iran, and I'm not so sure that's a bad thing. Iraq is torn between Sunni and Shiites. Sometimes, you just can't work out a peace diplomatically, so the only way to achieve peace is for one side to defeat the other. I think that if Iran backed the Shiite militias, Iraq could be stabilized.

create a vacuum, fill the vacuum, and best to have said vacuum of evil not on your doorstep.
drawing in, and fighting enemies in a land away from your home, and saving your citizens from the horror of a war at home is the most important thing. It should be said, that in the end, the only just form and the only stable form of gov't is that which is fought for, and won through civil war. Political philosophy 101 so to speak.

b. another attack is made on our soil against American citizens...
the 'civil' war in Iraq is based on feuds that have been going on for a while and the only reason they were suppressed before is because Saddam Hussein was busy torturing rebels and gasing the Kurds.
the U.S. military should do what is has done for decades.....continue to protect its citizens and the citizens of our allies since they are too cowardly to do it themselves....
the U.N. is a joke and they never accomplish anything....step aside and let the Americans handle it chumps

Definitely. It's immoral to help start a civil war and then just leave. American inability to stomach relatively few casualties is no reason to condemn tens of thousands of Iraqis to death.
