Should pharmaceutical companies be brought under public/government control?
Category: Real World > World Politics
Yes
When significantly more money is pumped into drug marketing & promotion than actual R&D, do drug companies really actually care about health? Particularly when even an ineffective or potentially dangerous drug can still reap $millions in annual sales? (from the ridiculously high prices that the companies charge)

No
As in nationalized? No. That's called communism, it doesn't work.
I would agree, however, that the way the FDA approves drugs (in particular, the structure of who pays for the application process) should be reformed.
Still, though, you can't destroy the underlying motivation behind pharmaceutical research, which is to make money. As a matter of fact, the government should sometimes dangle more money in front of these companies to get to them to do things that are not very profitable but would be of great benefit, such as flu vaccine production, for example.
