The lead on the toilet paper roll works better when over the roller. Rotating the roll requires less effort and the requires less of a reach.

This way paper also doesn't rub on the wall, which is more hygienic.

Personally I just subconciously do it. I never think of which way I'm putting the toilet paper back on the roll, yet it always ends up going over.

of course the toilet paper roll should be over, not under. if the roll is under, you're searching for it until the roll has rolled off the holder!

Where is the "I am to lazy to put it back on the roll so I leave it on top of the toilet" option?

I do it this way, because then it puts less strain on the bar in the center, thus allowing it to roll better. usually helps tons with brand new rolls, and those that need the special "charmin extender".
